As the capital of Alaska, Juneau is home to many state government operations and employees. State government is the largest employer in Juneau contributing 25% of the town’s total earnings. The other largest employers in Juneau include local and tribal government, retail trade, and leisure and hospitality. During the summer months, Juneau attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors off of cruise ships alone, calling for many services and employees in the tourism industry. Every summer, visitors come to Juneau just to work with tourism companies for a few months. Aside from conventional employment, Juneau seeks to cultivate entrepreneurship and encourages small business development through programs such as the Juneau Economic Development Council Innovation Summit and the Alaska Small Business Development Center.
