Juneau is a chosen city for the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child arts program and a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation grant for its Artful Teaching K-12 teacher professional development project.
Juneau is home to the University of Alaska’s Southeast Campus, which offers multiple degree opportunities in many fields of study and hosts the Alaska College of Education.
The District has 14 schools: six elementary schools, two middle schools, two larger high schools and an alternative high school, a PreK-8 Montessori School, a K-8 Charter School and Home-BRIDGE home school.
Other District programs include the Tlingit Culture, Language and Literacy (TCLL) program and a residential youth facility.
Continuing adult education is available through the Alaska Job Center Network, The Learning Connection, as well as Community Schools.
For the sixth year, the district received the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International for budget excellence.
Juneau was the first Alaska district to make the AP Honor Role (one of 433 districts in the U.S. & Canada) by increasing access to Advanced Placement® courses by at least 11{1297dc2d05b681920bacdd03f434681f496e0e9616c46befb4cc440b5a3a131a}, growing Alaska Native student participation and maintaining or improving the rate at which AP® students earned scores of 3 or higher.
Both larger high schools, Juneau-Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School, had a 100{1297dc2d05b681920bacdd03f434681f496e0e9616c46befb4cc440b5a3a131a} four-year graduation rate for its Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Multi-ethnic, and English Learners sub-groups in 2017. The overall four-year graduation rate at these high schools is 94{1297dc2d05b681920bacdd03f434681f496e0e9616c46befb4cc440b5a3a131a}.
Excellence in Education
Juneau has three high schools, two junior highs, seven elementary schools, a Montessori pre-school and several faith-based schools. Current enrollment is 4,800 students in the public school system, with an operating budget of approximately $143 million and 355 teachers.
The University of Alaska-Southeast is a small, four-year liberal arts school that enrolls approximately 1,000 full-time students. The university has enjoyed steady growth for two decades, expanding programs, facilities and enrollment, and gaining recognition in marine studies and environmental sciences.
